One of Australia's most historic and isolated river systems, the Cooper flows from monsoonal Queensland into South Australia's desert country.
In most years floodwater flows along the North West Branch of the Cooper, reaching the fabulous Coongie Lakes system, and creating a huge freshwater oasis. These are major wetland areas set in the middle of a desert; a region of great beauty and environmental significance. Red kangaroos and dingoes abound, eagles and flocks of pelicans dominate the skies and graceful brolgas dance on the shores.
Our tour explores Sturt National Park, literally bouncing with kangaroos and home to the rare bustard, the isolated gold rush tow n of Tibooburra, and the lonely mission at Innamincka. We visit Depot Glen, where Charles Sturt’s exploring party was stranded for six months in 1844.
We travel over the red sand dunes to the 'Dig Tree' on the banks of the Cooper. Here, explorers Burke, Wills and King spent months waiting to be rescued. Only King survived!
You need no previous canoeing experience! We paddle on both the Cooper and Coongie Lakes and walk into the solitude of the desert. We return to Adelaide via the Strzelecki Track, one of Australia's most famous stock routes and the spectacular Flinders Ranges, an ancient range of red quartzite.
Included: Transport ex Adelaide, camping and canoeing equipment, entry fees, all meals, wine, and guides.
All tours may be joined in Broken Hill.
